I’ve been teaching people how to handicap horse races for years and one of the questions I often hear is, “Why should I have someone teach me how to handicap horse races?”  That is a fair question and the answer is that I can help you to learn faster than if you try to discover all the things I have learned over the years.  I don’t have all the answers and I don’t have an automatic system that makes pots of money, but I do know some things about horse racing that you may not know.

If you are trying to learn how to handicap and make money at the horse races, you have probably already discovered how difficult it is.  You may be wondering if it will ever be easy.  I can tell you from past experience that it never gets easy.  The world keeps changing and what worked five years ago may not work today.

A great example of that is speed figures.  Years ago, when they were unknown to all but a few mathematical geniuses, just working out speed figures and using them to spot winners was enough to make a profit at the horse races.  Now speed figs are common knowledge and you can no longer make money just betting the horse with the highest speed figures.

As I said earlier, things keep changing.  There are trends that come and go and you have to be aware of them.  One of the best ways is to keep notes, but before you start taking notes, you have to know what it is you’re supposed to be watching,  That is something you can figure out on your own or learn.  If you buy a horse racing betting system, it should teach you some of the important factors in horse racing and how to use them in a meaningful way to pick more winners.

But let me warn you ahead of time, there are a lot of systems you can buy.  Some are good and others are worthless.  You have to be realistic in what you expect and realize that while someone can teach you horse racing factors and ways to look at races you may not have thought of, no one can make you a successful horse racing handicapper.  That is something you alone can do and it takes hard work.  How you go about doing it is completely up to you.  You can try to teach yourself everything, or learn what you can from other people and then apply it in your own unique way.

Like many people, you may be trying to find good horse race bets to supplement your income.  The hard economic times have led to some people trying to make money from betting on the races.  While it is true that some people make money wagering on races, let me assure you, it is very difficult and not recommended if you already have financial problems.

On the other hand, if you are serious about supplementing your income as a horse player, here are some tips to help you.  First of all, you must realize that picking winners isn’t enough.  You have to go a few steps beyond just being a good handicapper.  The truth of the matter is, when it comes to any kind of gambling, the bet is the key.  By that I mean, how your wager is structured and what it offers is more important than the individual runner.

At any race track on any given day, many win tickets are cashed, but the sad truth is that most people go home a loser.  That tells you something about picking winners and betting.  The most important thing you can do is to learn how to spot an advantageous situation for yourself.  That, in the simplest terms, is a wager that has a higher expected payback than the amount you invest to hit it.

An example is a bet that wins 50% of the time and pays back more than even money.  Simple mathematics tells us the wager will show a profit over the long run.  Of course, what you have to understand is that there is no guarantee that it will win every other time, so you have to be prepared for losing streaks, a natural part of life.

Your job as a horse player is to identify situations that payback more than the investment.  That takes patience and practice.  Keeping good records and learning to identify those spots is how real horse players make a living.  It is not easy by any stretch of the imagination and just when you have identified a good bet, the whole deal can change.  You have to watch for trends and biases and be prepared to stop and re-figure your wagering strategy.  If that sounds tricky, you’re right, it is.

A few good tips for developing a wagering strategy are, first and foremost, keep records of what wins and what it pays.  Secondly, start at the beginning of the season and don’t’ start betting until the horses are in mid season form.  Third, watch the track closely for changes in condition or bias. This can drastically effect things like early speed, closers, rail runners, etc.

While handicapping and learning to estimate the probability of each runner winning the race is an essential skill for horse racing betting success, the actual wagering methods and angles are important, too.  Wagering strategy means finding the best value for each dollar you invest as well as protecting your bankroll.  That isn’t very easy to do in an endeavor as risky as gambling on horses.

You should have a good money management plan for any financial undertaking in life and wagering on horse races is no exception.  Since it is risk prone and failure is a possibility, the first concern is structuring your bets so that you can out last a run of bad luck.  Obviously, if you run out of money, no matter how successful you may be as a handicapper, you can’t bet and turn those winners into financial gains.

So my first advice is to write down a plan for how much you will risk on each wager based on the amount of your bankroll.  Some experience should give you an idea of how often you win and how many bets you lose.  Let’s say you’ve kept some good records of your bets and know that you average 4 winners out of 10 bets, but you have also experienced losing streaks as long as 20 wagers.

Your bankroll is 1,000 units, it may be dollars, pounds, euros, or whatever currency you use.  Obviously, if you don’t want to get wiped out by a losing streak, you cannot bet more than 1/20 of your bankroll on any one bet.  I would caution you against going to that level, however and would instead advise you to go to 1/40th of your bankroll.  First of all, you don’t want to be taken down to your last betting unit by a run of bad luck.  It has a psychological effect and may influence your decision making.

Secondly, there is always the possibility that you will go beyond the 20 losers limit and what then?  Better to plan for the worst and then double it.  A long losing streak may be uncomfortable, but if you have one and still have half your bankroll and can make sizable bets, you’ll be glad you were cautious.

The next problem is what to place those wagers on.  Do you bet long shots or favorites or horses that are somewhere in between?  Once again, look at your records and see where you have the most success.  If you are comfortable with longer dry spells but like hitting bigger payoffs, go for the longer priced bets, as long as you can hit them, of course.

Churn is what happens as you make your wagers and it is what makes casinos and race tracks profitable.  Each time you bet a percentage goes to the race track or casino.  The more bets you make the more money you pay for the privilege of betting.  Therefore, you must weigh the risk and payoff against the number of times you’ll have to wager in order to collect.  Find the right balance of risk and reward because churn is the hidden enemy to every horse player and gambler.

Having just finished reading Game of Shadows – the alleged tell-all book in which the authors claim to have records detailing Barry Bonds’, as well as other athletes’, use of performance-enhancing drugs – it has become crystal clear that Bonds cheated, continues to cheat, and could not care less about it.


Bonds just about says this when he claims in his grand jury testimony that he hasn’t played in a baseball game since college when he attended Arizona State University. Basically, what he’s saying, and what he continues to say, is that he is an entertainer and not a competitor. He conveniently forgets how his alleged cheating has impacted the other players in the game, both past and present. And how, every night, in every stadium he plays in, he is the only person who is in on this little secret.


When I go to a game, I’m not there to be entertained. I’m there to see the team I support try to win. And when I make a wager on a team, I’m not doing it for the entertainment; I’m doing it to win. If I go to Vegas and play blackjack or craps, I consider that to be entertainment. While I would like to win, and I don’t believe the outcome has been predetermined, I still understand the odds are against me coming away a winner.


But Bonds apparently doesn’t see playing baseball as a competition. It sounds as though he views it as our opportunity to watch an “entertainer” stand up there and be walked two or three times a game and, maybe, just maybe, see him grace our presence with a home run. Get over yourself, Barry. Not only are you coming off like a pompous ass, you are also making an impact on the game that the record books will reflect forever.


For example, since 1999, when his steroid use is alleged to have begun, the San Francisco Giants have won or finished second in the NL West every year, except for last year when he spent just about all of the season on the disabled list, and they finished third. Take away Bonds’ production, or fill in the production that most players would contribute, and the Giants find themselves in a different position. Also, as he approached 40 years old, his numbers would naturally decline, not go up. With that factored in, the Giants truly would be hurting for production from Bonds.


Just ask Albert Pujols, who has finished second to Bonds in National League MVP voting twice, how Bonds’ steroid use has impacted his post-season award possibilities.

Unfortunately, the players who have truly been impacted by Bonds’ steroid use are the players who finished playing the game years ago. Bonds, along with Mark McGwire, has succeeded at setting the bar so high that no one will be able to approach their records. In doing so, they have made the average fan believe that 40 home runs a season is nice, but not Hall of Fame-worthy. One player who has been affected by this is Andrew Dawson. Dawson hit 438 home runs and drove in 1,591 RBIs. He also played baseball for 21 years and has 2,774 hits with 8 Gold Gloves and 314 stolen bases. With close to 10 knee surgeries, Dawson should have been the one allowed to take performance-enhancing drugs, not Bonds.


One thing I love about Bonds is that he refuses to even admit that Game of Shadows exists. The book has been out for about three months now and I have yet to hear of a lawsuit filed on Bonds’ behalf that contests the contents of the book. And yet everyone just casually goes about their sports day, without a care that Bonds continues to cheat because, as an entertainer, he feels he can.


As the book explains, Bonds has never had to stand before anyone and explain his actions – not even when he was a kid. He was always the best player on the team, received the benefits that comes with that title, and he continues to expect that to be the case. Regardless of how it impacts his body, the other players in the game, the kids growing up who are learning the game, or the record books – Bonds is concerned with one thing – reaping the financial advantages that being an “entertainer” in baseball provides.


And regardless of who has to pay to make that happen, Bonds is only too happy to stand there and take the paychecks and accolades that come with it. I’ve often wondered how he sleeps at night, knowing that he has an advantage that many other players don’t have – that he has cheated to get to where he is. And the only answer I can come up with is that when you are on the stage and being an entertainer, it’s just acting. It’s not who you really are – so you can get away with more. The question I have for Bonds is, when the show is over and you walk off the stage – who are you then?

It would be very unusual in any horse race to have a runner that nobody has had a bet on. For one reason or another there will be somebody who fancies each horse’s chance of being the winner. Each person will have made their selection based on some factor, whether it is the horses form, the jockey’s good looks or just the fact that they liked the colour of the horse.
Whatever the reason they will put money on their selection. Whether they win or lose, providing they have not gone silly they will have had a pleasant day at the races and gone home feeling relatively happy. This is what many race goers do day in and day out. However, if you want to make money from horse race betting you will need to adopt a systematic approach to finding winners.
Form can be an important indicator of horse’s chances but you can not just take it at face value. Just because a horse won its last race does not mean that it is a certainty to win its next. There are many other factors that have to be considered.
Distance
Most race horses are breed to be sprinters, middle distance or “stayers” (long distance runners). Sprinters run distances between 5 furlongs (around 600m) up to 7 furlongs (850 m). Middle distances are considered to be 1 Mile up to 2 miles and staying races are 2 Miles plus. Even within these divisions you can have horses that can run well at 5 furlongs but find 6 furlongs to far. So you have to check that the horse you fancy has form for the particular race distance.
Going
Although not so important in All Weather racing where the going tends to be standard on the turf the going can affect a horse’s performance. Most race horses run well on good or good to firm ground but some are better on either very soft or very hard ground. This is especially true when the going gets very heavy and it is not unusual for a “mudlark” to win in these conditions even when they do not have the best form in the race.

If you are serious about making money from horse racing in the UK you will need to either use their web site or get their daily printed newspaper which contains all the days racing information.
Horse racing is an exciting sport that is popular around the world. Millions of people enjoy a flutter on the horses and some people even make money from their betting. For the “Newbie” horse racing and finding winners may seem difficult to understand but it can pay to learn the basics.

The Boston Red Sox will try to win the second of a three game stretch vs the Texas Rangers on Saturday night at 8:05pm EST from Rangers Ballpark. Online sportsbooks have the Red Sox -115 favorites on the road in MLB predictions vs the Rangers -105 while the over/under total is listed at 8 OVER (-115). Texas will try to win their second straight game at home by sending righthander Colby Lewis to the mound with a 9-8 record this year and 3.37 ERA while Boston will counter with lefthander Jon Lester who has gone 12-7 with a blistering 2.94 ERA this season. Baseball betting odds also favor the Red Sox -1.5 (+145) in MLB picks on the run line point spread vs the Rangers +1.5 (-165).

Their were plenty of hits on Friday night, a total of 31 to be exact, in last night’s 10-9 victory for the Rangers at home. Texas won the game as -130 favorites in MLB odds while the 19 total runs flew OVER the 9.5 posted at online sportsbooks. Nelson Cruz rocked a walk-off 418-ft homer to left field in the eleventh inning to give Texas the win off a knuckleball from Boston pitcher Tim Wakefield. “Wakefield always throws the knuckleball… Especially the first pitch, he always tries to throw the first strike,” Cruz said after the win. “So I just tried to tee him up.” Wakefield was given the loss after coming in to close the game and instead gave the Red Sox their second straight loss.

Heading into MLB betting odds for tonight’s game, Texas has gone 66-48 on the season, 2-8 when playing on Saturday and 4-6 after a win. The Rangers are 6-1 in their last 7 games when playing at home against Boston, 5-1 in their last 6 games overall when playing the Red Sox and 5-2 in their last 7 games at home. Boston has gone 66-51 in baseball predictions for the season, 6-4 when playing on Saturday and 6-4 after a loss. The Red Sox are 1-5 in their last 6 games when playing the Rangers and 1-6 in their last 7 games overall when playing on the road against Texas.

The New York Yankees always have the payroll, income, and support to field a competitive and contending team but there are plenty of concerns heading into the 2010 season about their aging line-up and thin pitching staff which is why they did not open as a MLB betting favorite in odds to win the World Series.

The Yankees still are in the conversation as a favorite however with online sportsbooks listing the New York +550 in odds to win the World Series. The Yankees are also listed at +300 to win the American League, +170 to win the American League East Division and have an over/under win total of 91.5. Hank Steinbrenner is becoming well known as the “Baby Boss” for some bombastic comments made at the start of spring training in which he said that the 2010 New York Yankees were not focused and were too fat and happy after winning the 2009 World Series.

The Bronx Bombers led major league baseball in MLB odds for run scoring last year but captain Derek Jeter slumped, at least by his standards, with a .270 average and just 10 home runs. Mark Teixeira also slumped down to a .256 average but maintained power with 33 home runs and 108 runs batted in. Dave Eiland was fired as pitching coach but questions remain as to whether or not Larry Rothschild will be an upgrade as a replacement or whether the starting staff is simply too thin in talent. Most baseball betting experts and handicappers analyzing the odds to win the World Series have made the startling revelation that the Yankees need at least two quality starters to be considered a serious threat to contend for the American League pennant in 2011.

There is also the letdown effect from making an all-out bid on Cliff Lee who ended up taking less money to sign with the Phillies. CC Sabathia anchors the rotation as does closer Mariano Rivera in the bullpen. So far during Spring Training, the New York Yankees have been quite pleased with their rotation of pitchers as Bartolo Colon is the only one to have allowed a run thus far. While Russell Martin will be the starter, who will be the backup behind the plate when the regular season starts is still up in the air. Francisco Cervelli recently suffered a fractured foot which now leaves the door open for Jesus Montero.

The Atlanta Braves are having a challenging season so far. Currently with 39 games into this 2010 season the Braves are in 4th place of the National League East division with a record of 19-20. Not that they were expected to win the division this season but there are already 5.5 games behind the first place Philadelphia Phillies. That does not mean that the Braves are not worth wagering on. There are many favorable situations discovered from my baseball handicapping on when to wager on the Atlanta Braves.

The Atlanta Braves are not making whole lot of noise this season. Long gone are the well known players from the past yet they still are a competitive team. Looking at my baseball betting system there are some favorable situations in beting the Braves.

First of all, the Atlanta Braves are still a very good team when playing at home. They have a home record this season of 11-6 or 65% wins. Compare that to the road record of 8-14 or 36% wins. When playing at home the Braves get more from their pitching as the only allow an average of 3.5 runs scored. When on the road the average allowed rises to 4.6 runs. This would explain that at home the Braves are a good under play as 10 out of 17 or 59% home games have gone under the total. While playing on the road this season the Braves have only gone under the total 47% of the time.

Avoid wagering on the Braves when facing fellow National League East opponents. Here the poor Braves really have struggled so far this year only going 4-10. They obviously don’t get much run support against the NL East as they have gone under the total 11-2-1 or 84% of the time. 11 times this season the Braves have been the underdog and as usual the odds maker has it right as the Braves are 2-9 as a dog this season.

It has been average season for the Braves. Nobody expected the Braves to challenge the Phillies for the division but if they can win some more games on the read they might make it interesting before the season is over. As a baseball handicapper you need to take advantage of the strengths and weaknesses as the Braves continue to perform well when playing at home but struggle on the road throughout the season. When following a sports betting system you need to know when teams are vulnerable and bet against them and know when a team is to peak. Unfortunately for the Braves they are a much weaker ball club on the road as I would focus wagering on the Braves when home in low scoring games.
